Imagine that we lived in a universe much like our current one, with the same kind of distribution of galaxies and clusters, but that was contracting rather than expanding. Would we expect that the galaxies would smooth out toward the future as the universe contracted, creating a homogeneous plasma such as we see in the past of our real (expanding) universe? Not at all.
