“What’s a mating connection?” I asked quietly, having the foresight to assume that it was the sort of question that needed to be asked in a hushed tone. I didn’t need any more males eavesdropping and making fun of me. “Is it another sex thing?” “No,” Dexter said with a sharp insistence. “At least, not entirely.” He took a deep breath and chewed the inside of his cheek. His behavior reminded me of a parent who was being asked the all-important question of where babies came from. I had clearly thrown him off guard, but I couldn’t help but be amused by his loss for words.
