Flashes flit through my eyes, skating in the depths of my mind. I could see them like they were right in front of me. Me, in lives I’d never lived, with her — laughing, crying, kissing. Together.

“Twin flames are two halves of one soul. There’s an intense connection that can’t be replicated. There’s pain associated with flames, both people mirroring one another. When you find your twin, you can’t be apart from them without going a little mad.”

I felt our hearts connect with their matching rapid beats, I realized he’d already won. I had fallen in love with him. And he would be my undoing. When our breathing had calmed and the ferocity of what just happened settled, I loosened my legs from around his waist and let them fall against the bed, entirely spent.

There was nothing to fix. My broken pieces mattered. I mixed strength with my pain for everything I had overcome my entire life.

“Sometimes I think I was a star in another life,” I said sleepily, yawning. “Stealing across the sky, granting wishes to those who felt like they had nothing to hope for.”

“You always love me best in the dark,” I said. “Because you are my light.”
