“To the future. May it be as bright as you all deserve. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being such wonderful friends. Actually, you’re more than my friends. You’re my family. I love you all.”
“I have the means to make it happen. As for why I want to marry you…” A wolflike hunger flickers in his gaze. “Let’s just say I find you interesting.”
“What?” “It’s just that people don’t often say no to me.” “Meaning never.” “Exactly.” I say flippantly, “If I’m going to be your wife, you’d better get used to it.”
I clear my throat, then say tartly, “If the large and intimidating stranger who walked into your bookstore and proposed marriage were looking at you as if you were his next meal, you might be tense too.” A note of darkness creeps into his voice. “If I were looking at you like you were my next meal, you’d already be eaten.”
His tone gently mocking, he says, “I’ve been obsessed with you for years. I’ve watched you from afar, planning, scheming, waiting for exactly the right moment to make you mine. Now all my planning has paid off, and the moment is here.” His mysterious smile grows wider. “Hello, little lamb. Welcome to the lion’s den.”
“It’s just not every day that a billionaire with an eating disorder proposes marriage to me. I mean, it’s happened before, obviously”—my laugh sounds crazed, like someone’s holding a gun to my head—“just not this week. Oh, that reminds me.”
“Telling a woman not to overthink something is as dangerous as telling her to calm down when she’s angry.”
“You’re something much better than beautiful. And when we’re married, I’ll tell you what it is.”
In a hot, dark voice, he says, “Because my wife asked me to. And I’ll give her anything she wants.”
“You never have to be afraid of anything again. If you have a problem, I’ll fix it. If you need something, I’ll give it to you. If anyone bothers you, I’ll make them wish they hadn’t. Whatever you want or need, you tell me, and you’ll have it. You’re mine now.”
He whispers, “Be my good girl. Come on, baby. Say it for me.”
“Careful with that smart tone, wife.” Smiling, I say flippantly, “Oh, please. You love my smart tone.” After a brief pause, he says in a husky voice, “Yes.” My heart skips a beat.
It isn’t love. I know that. But it is divine. No sermon ever preached could move my spirit more. In the morning, I wake in his arms, feeling like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
“Because I’m yours. You’ve tattooed your name on everything inside me. The least I can do is make the outside match.”
“I know you think we should’ve gone slow. But I know nothing of slowness. I dove into you like the ocean, headfirst, not caring if I’d drown.”
“Now you’ve got me curious. What did he say? I promise I won’t repeat it.” With obvious scorn at the sentiment, he says, “He said he saw his whole future the first time he looked into your eyes.”
“There are a million shades of gray between good and evil, love. Am I on the darker end of the spectrum? Yes. Am I a bad man who does good things or a good man who does bad things? Both. But you made this monster your slave. All of what I am, good and bad, light and dark, belongs to you.”
“You are beautiful, Emery, but that’s the least interesting thing about you. What I meant then is that you’re the only thing that’s ever made me feel alive. I was dead before I met you, but I looked into your eyes, and you brought me back to life. What you are is my reason for being. My center of gravity. The fixed point around which everything else turns. You feel like sunlight to me. You feel like a sky full of stars.
Not all happily-ever-afters are for white knights, darling. Sometimes the villain gets the girl. And isn’t that a much more interesting ending to the story? With all my black heart, Your monster
When liars like us fall in love, everything else falls apart. But, for now at least, we’re falling together.
