“You, too—ahh—” My leg cramped hard, and I started to go down. My hands shot out, prepared for a cement landing when an arm hooked around my waist and hauled me back so forcefully both my feet lifted off the ground. Even though lanky was the first word that came to mind, Ranger was surprisingly strong. Unexpectedly. He’d picked me up and steadied me like I weighed no more than a doll. “Are you alright, Sydney?” Ranger panted, his warm, heavy breaths brushing my ear. “What’s wrong?”
“You’re not fine,” he insisted with a low voice that inched dangerously close to a growl. Neither was he.
Was Sydney struggling because of her ex-fiancé? Had something happened? Was she okay? That was all I cared about.

“Oh, that wouldn’t be the worst.” “There’s something more torturous than having a spike slowly driven up your ass?” “Yes.” I looked up at her and replied before I could think. Everything with Sydney was always before I could think. “Losing you.”
“There are no experts on loving, Ranger. Just people brave enough to try.”
“Have you told them how you feel?” His eyes widened. “I don’t know how to do that.” “You told them how you felt when they wanted someone else to protect me.” I gave him a shy smile. “That was different.” “What? Why?” Our gazes locked. “Because no one would ever protect you like I would.”
“Having a life I can’t forget isn’t the same as having a life worth remembering. And the only life worth remembering, Sydney, is the one that has you in it. You’re my snow angel, the part of all of this worth savoring… you’re my magic.” His warm breath fused to my lips. “Say you’ll stay tonight… and the rest of your life?”
