Akhet being one of the three seasons the ancient Egyptians divided their year into, along with Peret and Shemu, it translated, more or less, to “inundation.” It was a several-month period during which the Nile would flood, inundating the floodplains with silt and leaving behind incredibly fertile black soil once it receded.
