Kimberlé Crenshaw called attention to the way in which different forms of disadvantage can compound. The concept of “intersectionality” captured how existing discrimination law failed to recognize that the challenges faced by Black women cannot be reduced to a sum of the challenges faced by white women and Black men. The concept of intersectionality soon took on a life of its own, becoming a shorthand for two related yet distinct ideas.
