You were never supposed to matter, but you do. You ruined everything, and I don’t care. Ruin me. Destroy me. As long as I have you.”
“Don’t do this because you feel a debt from what you heard today.”
“My warning still stands. Do this and I’ll never give you back.”
“Be sure before you do this, Serpent. Do this, and I claim you.”
“I’ve seen your hands draw a blade much, much faster than this.”
“Patience, Songbird.” “Patience was spent at the cove. Hurry your hand, or I will do it myself.”
“Which one of those bastards did this?”
“Doesn’t matter which one. They’re dead. Their blood will spill at your feet.”
With the Ever King, the way he looked at me like something precious, something so stunning he might get on the ground and worship me, I embraced every searing glance.
“You are my destruction. Do you know that? I will never have enough of you.”
I might’ve been his destruction, but he was my ruin. I would break into a thousand pieces if it meant Erik was the one to piece them back together with his touch.
“I will never get my fill of you either, Serpent,” I said, voice hoarse.
“Gods, you’re so ready for me, aren’t you, love?”
“Erik, oh gods . . .” “Say you’re mine, Songbird,” he growled against my neck. “Say it.” “Yours. I’m yours.”
When I opened my eyes, the king was gazing at me with a tenderness strong enough to knot emotion in the back of my throat.
“Don’t you dare ask if I’m sure.” “I don’t want to hurt you,” he whispered. “You’ll take me slow, but you’ll take all of me.”
He was not without sharp edges, but to my soul I knew Erik Bloodsinger was a light in my darkness. He was the beautiful monster I would always want. I’d always love. Truth be told, I’d been falling for the Ever King since I saw his sunset eyes in the dim light of that barred cell.
Erik threaded one hand with mine, the other he kept pressed on the bed, holding his body up just enough he didn’t bury me into the mattress.
“You feel so good wrapped around me,” Erik gritted out between thrusts. “You were made for me, Livia.”
Tender strokes of his hands over my skin struck me with the notion that, perhaps, the Ever King needed safety within the intimacy of my
“Don’t regret me, Songbird.” I stroked his cheek, grinning. “I never will, Serpent.”
Livia was my weakness. Use her against me, and I would unravel. Yet in some ways she was my ultimate strength. The notion of her being harmed again drew out the fiercest desire to fight and kill in her damn name.
But for Livia, I’d burn the kingdom and start any war if it meant she was safe.
“Say you’re mine. Say it.”
“I’m yours.” I buried my face against the slope of her neck. “Gods, I’m yours.”
You are Livia Ferus, blood of warriors, body of a goddess, destroyer of the king’s cock . . .
“I am Erik Bloodsinger, and I will no longer bow to the words and legacies of others. “I wear the crown of the Ever, I sail the Ever Ship, I bear the mark of this kingdom. I. Am. Your. King. And she—” He pointed behind him. “She is mine. She is the Ever Queen.”
“The first Ever Queen,”
“If it is what she desires. I will not force you to stay, Songbird. The choice is yours.”
“Crown or no crown,” I said softly. “I will always belong to you.”
You’re my beautiful monster.
“You were gone last night. Nightmares crept in, so I painted this to chase them away.” I tightened my hold around her waist. “I don’t like that. If you can’t sleep, I don’t care if I’m across the damn sea, call to me and I’ll come.” “I’m not calling you for every horrid dream. I’ve handled the Mare demons for turns on my own, I’ll be fine.” I lifted my head. “But you don’t have to be alone anymore.”
“Anyone touches you, then you wear them around your neck.”
“I would follow your darkness across the skies and seas.”
“I have been pulled from you for the better part of two days. Patience is spent. Do you wish me to go after them and praise their efforts, or do you want me inside you?”
“All I need is you. That is what I like. All of you.” In truth, no one had done this. Worshiped me.
“Perfect, Songbird. You’re too perfect.”
“Erik, I’m close. So close.” “With me, love. You come with me.”
“Serpent.” “Songbird.” I kissed her pulse point, breathing her in. “I love you. Every dark, beautiful piece.”
Words failed me, so I kissed her. I kissed her until she understood I would crush worlds for her. I would cross the skies and seas chasing her light. I’d never stop.
“He is my desire, Alek.”
“He’s my hjärta. Bond or not.”
A hjärta meant one had found a love so deep it was the other beat of your heart, a true ...

“The power of the Ever.” He laughed with a new kind of viciousness and stroked my cheek. “Time for you to be of use to the true king, not my pathetic brother.”
“Took you long enough . . . I came straight . . . straightaway when you . . . got stabbed.”
“Saw him and a . . . fox.”
“Daj.” Gavyn released Celine but kept his arm around her shoulder and wrapped the other around Sewell’s neck. “I’ll be all right. You watch your own back. Watch Cel’s.” Sewell cradled Celine’s head to his shoulder when she hugged his waist.
“Erik, you were my brother once. You are all I have.” I hesitated for half a breath before patting his face. “I’m not greeting the Otherworld until she is back. Help me get her back.” He shook my shoulder twice. “To the end.”
“I know you killed him,” he whispered as we approached the gangplank. “You had my loyalty already, but after you killed Harald, it was sealed in blood that day.”
