Such a beautiful little bird. What a pity it was that her serpent had come to ruin her.
I stepped out into the road once more, watching her. Studying her. She was never theirs anyway. Not really. From the moment the songbird tried to appeal to a serpent, she was mine.
“Hello, love. I promised I’d come for you. Have you figured my lie yet? For I have figured yours.”
“Such venom.” With one knuckle, I stroked her cheek. “Careful with your threats of my untimely death, love, or you might end up stealing my heart.”
“Do your worst, Bloodsinger. The heart I once showed you as a stupid girl is gone away where you cannot touch it again.”
Now, sleep, scream, beg, I care little, but accept that you’re mine, and you always were.”
Hate me, curse me, I cared little, so long as I was the first thought of her day and the last of her night.
Blood that is not yours to win like some treasure.” “Ah, but you might be my greatest treasure.”
the king grinned with a touch of venom. “More sweet lies.”
“Not the way you do, and I think I hate you for it. You should be horrid all the time.” “I’ll try harder, Songbird.”
Erik hesitated, then he leaned over and bruised my lips with his kiss. When he pulled away, he whispered, “Still hate me?” “Always,”
Erik’s mouth turned up in a half grin, but his words were rife in something soft, something vulnerable. “Hate me all you want, but don’t regret me. Promise me that.”
“You bastard.” I bit the inside of my cheek as I touched the tips of each bristle, each corked vial filled with thin colors of dyes and paints. Watered down to a glaze. Paints not meant for parchment, but for glass. Bloodsinger supplied his palace with window paints.
“I’ve no need to take you,” he whispered. “You’re already mine.”
Little by little, I was handing over my scorched, rotted heart. I couldn’t stop.
“Say it. Say you dreamt of me like I’ve dreamt of you.” “You’ve haunted me, love. Since the end of that war, I’ve never forgotten you.”
“I said I’m yours.” I trapped his face in my palms. “I’m waiting for you to become mine.”
Ruin me. Destroy me. As long as I have you.”
Erik had his darkness, but I was learning mine.
He was not without sharp edges, but to my soul I knew Erik Bloodsinger was a light in my darkness. He was the beautiful monster I would always want. I’d always love.
“You, Erik Bloodsinger, are the kind of darkness I would follow across the skies and seas.”
“I love you. Every dark, beautiful piece.”
