There are roughly three thousand species of mosquitoes in the world. Of those, only a small percentage are of concern from a public health perspective: Culex pipiens, which carries West Nile virus, and Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian Tiger mosquito, which has recently arrived in the US from Asia and can carry dengue and Zika, but does not lust after human blood like Aedes aegypti. Aedes aegypti is an extremely competent vector for dengue and Zika, as well as yellow fever and chikungunya, making it one of the most dangerous animals on Earth.
