In many cultures, owls are leagued with witches and malevolent spirits, with sorcery and death. “Human fear of owls is common in every part of the world,” says Johnson. “The form it takes may vary from culture to culture, but there are patterns that pop up, consistent beliefs and narratives in different versions.”
