I’m fighting a rising tide of guilt. Guilt at my insurmountable lies when he so selflessly wants to help me. Guilt that he’ll never find his lady assassin—me. And guilt that I can no longer deny that the heat in his eyes when he looks at me is more than benign curiosity. Still, all I do is nod and say, “Deal.”
A deadly melody in the dark of night. A whispered order, “Two drops on your tongue.” Vacant eyes dragged downstream. Blue, endless blue. And so much red.
It means you looked at me, borrowed face and all, and thought I was enough.
