But some preferred to say that humans—while needing the guidance of good educators and influences—came out best if they developed their own natural “seeds” of humanity from within. The two aspects of development were not contradictory: the student still needed a good teacher to nurture that growth and ward off bad influences. Even if teachers were there mainly to nudge and guide, rather than to create a shape, they still had reason to feel pride in their work.
