When the house is dark, he finds you.
“This okay?” The cursor hovers on what the platform describes as a teen rom-com, based on the bestselling young-adult novel series of the same name. “Looks great,” you say. She leans back with a shy smile. You remember what it was like at her age, being a little ashamed of everything you liked.
She giggles again and turns her gaze back to the screen. Her position on the couch relaxes, her right side almost leaning into you. She is here. An ally, a friend. You feel so alone next to her, more than you ever did in the shed.
Rule number five of staying alive outside the shed: He must need you at least as much as you need him.
And now, you feel his presence around you. Eyes peering through the bookshelves, an eagle stalking his domain from up high.
“There’s going to be a party,” he says, as if he and Cecilia haven’t already discussed it in front of you. As if you can hear things only when he wants you to hear them.
