In 1997 Dayan and Montague published a landmark paper, coauthored with Schultz, titled “A Neural Substrate of Prediction and Reward.” To this day, this discovery represents one of the most famous and beautiful partnerships between AI and neuroscience. A strategy inspired by how Sutton thought the brain might work turned out to successfully overcome practical challenges in AI, and this in turn helped us interpret mysterious data about the brain.
