Both the moon and love are romantic and enchanting, can be moody and mysterious, possess dark sides, and have gravitational pulls on us that we just can’t control, no matter how hard we try.
“At least here there’s room for negotiation,” he says with a smirk. “I hope your future negotiations go better than today,” I say, thinking about Mae Yí-Pó’s warning of vultures.
She sighs. “Right, of course. You’re the matchmaker who can’t be matched.”
Bennett looks at his shirt. “This is most definitely salmon,” he says. After a moment, he adds, “I know this is weird, but I think we should stay. Let’s start with a clean slate. I’m Bennett. You’re Olivia slash Liv slash Bakery Girl.” So he nicknamed me, too.
“Movies now are a literal escape from reality. But to me, love stories are the best escape. What’s your favorite movie?” I ask, taking a sip of slushie.
“I hope you’re ready to fall in love.”
“Olivia, you’ll miss out on good people if you believe compatibility is the one and only way to love,” Bennett says. “Trust me on this.”
I can sense the presence of his hands, every nerve in my body tingling. It drives me absolutely wild.
He looks down at the ground and then back up into my eyes. “I also know that I’d like to kiss you. If that’s all right?”
And all at once, despite everything I believe in, this is what I know for certain: I want to kiss this man.
It’s as though Bennett’s the painter and I’m the canvas; every kiss a stroke of the brush, revealing, little by little, the unexpected masterpiece that is our embrace.
If Bennett’s the ocean, I’m already in too deep. No life raft can save me now. This riptide pulls me farther and farther out to sea until I can hardly see the shore.
He holds my hand against his chest. “My data-driven mindset will always be balanced by your heart.”
