Lenin’s Russia was to be a nation where virtually all of society was to be managed by the government in the name of equality and for the total benefit of all.

Censorship increasingly became the norm in Russia.

In 1917 the Federal government set up the United States Food Administration to manage the supply and distribution of food throughout the United States, both to make sure everyone (especially everyone in the armed forces) would have access to food, but also to make sure that wartime hoarding and profiteering would be eliminated or, at the very least, kept to a minimum.

In 1932 and 1933, the New York Times was denying that the Soviet government was targeting the Ukrainian rural population with terror and genocide, just as less than a decade later it would obscure the news that Hitler was targeting German Jews.

Imagine, if you can, the three million Americans holding the most strategic posts of power and influence in our country being suddenly subjected to a pitiless public inquiry into their past history even unto their great-grandparents, into their political faith, private conduct, and more intimate personal foibles. Imagine this inquiry conducted under conditions which made it the duty of every neighbor and charwoman and office boy to question and accuse these upper three million. Imagine that, and you have some inkling of what took place in Russia.

The freedom of speech and expression that had long been a promise of socialism had given way to a system where even freedom of thought was intolerable, and grounds for execution.

It took months for the mania to die down, until the top military brass was entirely staffed by men who owed their positions to Stalin.

The American Communist Party saw African-Americans as a target group to further their cause, promising them a society based on full racial equality.
