The congregational size had risen to 109 members in Massachusetts by 1830, but remained far smaller in the more rural states. In 1857, Maine reported only 70 members per church. Each of these averages would have been lower in 1776. Finally, Herman C. Weber (1927) reported that in 1826 the average Presbyterian congregation had 70 members.
