The Churching of America, 1776-2005: Winners and Losers in Our Religious Economy

It is estimated that from 1718 to 1775 at least 50,000 persons, most of them convicted of capital crimes, were forcibly transported to America by order of English courts. Another 16,000 or so were sent over by the courts in Ireland (Bailyn, 1986).
