What I realized from my tour is that people don’t believe there is a difference between real and fake anymore. Bernard Arnault’s marketing plan had worked: consumers don’t buy luxury branded items for what they are, but for what they represent.

Personally I think this is the thesis of the book, that greed has ruined luxury brands because it changed how people treat them. People used to appreciate the exquisite designs and craftsmanship but now they love the most vulgar designs for their flashiness. The end result is that luxury goods production goes down the drain for those who love what they used to be like. (Just a little caveat: the book left a lot of people with the idea that Hermes and Chanel are the exceptions of the rule. I cannot yet afford an Hermes but I can tell ya Chanel is not the exception at all. Faulty products here and there, especially most of the SLGs and some of the seasonal lines, but indeed less so than LV.)
