In Haiti, Farmer told me, that could mean thirty years old, since 25 percent of Haitians die before they reach forty. “It’s because there’s a near famine here,” says Farmer, examining him. “The man is muscular. Perhaps in his declining years he can’t scrap for food as well, or maybe there’s someone he’s trying to feed.”
