she says she always had her faith but it took her some time to find a church she trusted

I don’t know what it means to move from one place to another, to make a home for yourself; to try and build a life from uncertainty.

Even though I struggle with my faith in church, I can recognize Mum holds her faith close because she is here. Because she emerged from that place of waiting, where surviving the conditions she was being asked to endure was nothing short of a miracle.

When I ask more of Mum, of the time she came here, the problem isn’t that she doesn’t remember. It’s that she cannot forget.
