The ARPANET, and later the Internet, grew as much from the free availability of software and documentation as from anything else. (By contrast, Digital Equipment’s DECNET was a proprietary network.) The Internet also supported a wide range of network technologies. Although the satellite and packet-radio networks had finite lifetimes, they helped open developers’ eyes to the need to handle a multitude of different networks.
