Another, called UUCP, was built at Bell Laboratories for file transfer and remote-command execution. USENET, which began in 1980 as a means of communication between two machines (one at the University of North Carolina and one at Duke University), blossomed into a distributed news network using UUCP. NASA had its own network called the Space Physics Analysis Network, or SPAN.
