The market opened up for routers. Gateways were the internetworking variation on IMPs, while routers were the mass-produced version of gateways, hooking local area networks to the ARPANET. Sometime in the early 1980s a marketing vice president at BBN was approached by Alex McKenzie and another BBN engineer who thought the company should get into the business of building routers.
