Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’[*]
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’[*] and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies![*] Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends,[*] how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your

“A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”
This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’[*] 6 Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. 19 Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’
The LORD is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? 2 When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though a mighty army surrounds me,
my heart will not be afraid. Even
if I am attacked, I will remain confident. 4 The one thing I ask of the LORD— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. 5 For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. 6 Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who sur...

For a prostitute will bring you to poverty,[*] but sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.
20 I walk in righteousness, in paths of justice.
Tainted wealth has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.
Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. 2 For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. 3 Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. 4 Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.
Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace. 38 But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future. 39 The LORD rescues the godly; he is their fortress in times of trouble. 40 The LORD helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him.
People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.
Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.
‘Honor your father and mother,’[*] and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’[*] 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’[*] 12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. 13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition.
Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod. 14 Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites disaster.
The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their destruction. 16 The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.
“Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.
“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people.[*]
Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.
People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray.
Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.”
Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. 25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible.
The fears of the wicked will be fulfilled; the hopes of the godly will be granted. 25 When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.
