“You could never look awful,” he said faintly.
that she wasn’t nothing to him. That she was everything. That he’d turned back time to keep her alive, and he would make the same choice again.
“Were you watching Evangeline again?”
But Jacks wasn’t feeling much these days unless the feelings involved Evangeline,
“At least she’ll be alive to hate me.”
One of her favorite pastimes was to dream and to imagine.
He wanted her to look at him, just once, and know him the way she had before.
“Please, Little Fox, remember.”
Yet Evangeline saw a flicker of pain in his eyes, as if it also hurt him to leave.
“About that,” she said, “someone else did try to kill me earlier, before I entered this place.”
“At this point, I’m just assuming everyone wants you dead.” “Does that include you?” “No.” There wasn’t even a second of hesitation.
“No!” Evangeline quickly grabbed his wrist. Jacks scowled. “Don’t tell me I’m not allowed to kill birds now.” “It’s a pet, and it shouldn’t be condemned because of its master.” Jacks looked at Evangeline as if she made absolutely no sense to him. But he put away the knife.
“There is never necessary evil, just poor choices, and I fear you’re about to make one, boy.”
“You ask a lot of questions.” “Only because you do a lot of questionable things.”
