Once upon a time, a girl who believed in fairytales stole the heart of a prince who had sworn to never love.
“It’s still dark outside.” “Exactly.” Jacks threw the last of the clothes at her. “Will you stop that!” “Will you finally get dressed?”
And yet even then he hadn’t been able to walk away. He wanted a piece of her. To keep her. To use her for later.
“Have we met before?” she asked. “Do I know you?” “No. I don’t usually play with things that easily break.”
There was blood on his hands, and his eyes were shot through with it as well. Yet she’d never wanted anyone more.
She’d felt butterflies when she’d kissed Apollo, but Evangeline had a feeling that kissing Archer would be earth-shattering.
One of the reasons Jacks had allowed himself to be turned into a Fate was so that Castor wouldn’t be alone.
Jacks held tight, knotting her hair in his fist and keeping his forehead pressed to hers. “Please, Little Fox, remember.”
“You ask a lot of questions.” “Only because you do a lot of questionable things.”
I am Jacks’s true love. I believe it with the same confidence that I believe that water fills the oceans and morning follows the night. I believe it with all my heart and soul. And there has to be some sort of magic in that.”
“What is the point of having friends if they’re not there to support your bad decisions?”
“Well, I’m here now, so—” LaLa waved a hand toward the forest. “Did you just dismiss me?” Castor asked. “I tried,” LaLa said.
Jacks had been the moon and she’d been the tide, controlled by his impossible force. That much had not changed.
“It was not love at first sight.” She huffed. “I only said I liked your dimples at the start.” She dropped her hand from his cheek. “I didn’t even like you. I thought you were terrible.” “And yet.” He grabbed her hand again and wrapped it around his neck. “You kept staring.”
“Tell me about the apples.” “Next question.” “You said I could ask whatever I wanted.” The not-quite-human-boy’s eyes turned teasing, sparking with little flecks of silver. “I didn’t say that I would answer.”
