“The wheel of fate keeps turning, my friend. We’re just along for the ride.”
For so long, she had looked at me that way. As something beneath her. Ugly. Wrong. But I had never pretended to be anything except me. It was the lies and secrets of others that had masked my true skin. And now that I knew who I was, I would cower no longer.
“Looks like I’m going to hell.”
Home had never been the roof over my head, the town, or even the woods I loved so much. Home was my family.
“Earth magic is bound by nature’s rules. We can harness it, borrow it, but what is life in the eyes of creatures who crave ending it?
“Let me make one thing clear,” Death hissed quietly. “I owe you nothing. I am death. I am despair. Mortals don’t know the meaning of fear until they step into my world.
“Love is a funny thing. It burrows inside you until it’s etched into your bones. You can’t forsake it, nor can you deny it. The things she’s done, I will never forgive; the woman she was, I will never forget.”
“Tell me, snake, how well can you hiss without a forked tongue?”
You’re a little ball of sunshine in a fucked-up world
