“I’m glad you’re looking into this yourself,” Aristide abruptly said. Noctus supported me with one arm so he could comb his hand through his hair. “You think I don’t work enough?” “No,” Aristide said. “You work too much. It’s why everyone has welcomed your cat with a scary amount of enthusiasm. But you’re so intent on repenting for what you’ve done, you stay locked up in your home.” Repenting? For what? Isn’t he angry about how the elves were wiped out—especially the Mors? “I’m not repenting,” Noctus said. “I did what was necessary.” “I am all too aware of that, my friend,” Aristide said. Ker stretched her head across the gap between the two men, nudging Noctus’s side with her nose. “But doing the right thing doesn’t mean you don’t carry wounds from it,” Aristide continued. Noctus snorted. “After all our years together, I would think any noble thoughts you had about me would have shattered long ago.” “Oh, don’t worry yourself,” Aristide said. “I never had any noble thoughts about you to begin with.” “How reassuring.” Aristide grinned, and what maybe could have passed as a half-smile briefly curved on Noctus’s lips.
