Life is about balance, right? I know there’s a balance, and when you think things are going great, that’s usually when something bad happens. Just like when you’re about to give up, a little sliver of light brightens up the dark. And sometimes you’ll have a lot of good and a little bit of bad, but then you’ll have a lot of bad and a little bit of good. It evens out. It should be fair.
“So, you like messy things?” “I like you so, yeah.”
Because no one has ever looked at me the way Jake looks at me. Moms don’t count. It’s that I’m so happy you exist look. I’m sure you know it. Most people do. And when someone looks at you like they’re grateful you’re alive and they’re lucky to even know you, it’s the best feeling in the world.
“Where are you going to be in four years, Jake?” “Sober. With you.” He nods before leaning away just enough to kiss me. Our busted lips press together, and nothing has ever felt so right.
