the Gram test. In this test, bacteria are stained with crystal violet, treated with iodine, washed with alcohol, and then stained again with a contrasting dye. Bacteria retaining the violet color are called “Gram-positive.” Those that do not are “Gram-negative.” The result of the Gram test is comparable to a witness identifying an assailant as white or black; the answer simply eliminates some possible suspects.
