Behind her, Alistair Wolfe keeps his glacial gaze trained on his girlfriend, ready to catch her if she tries to run off. The tie tucked beneath his dark gray suit matches the exact shade of Cora’s hair, and a distant part of me wonders what it’s like to have someone be so in love with you that they want to carry a piece of you anywhere they go. Even if they’re spending the night plastered to your side.
“Yes, and when the novelty of the situation wore off, I realized I didn’t fucking enjoy sharing.”
When I press into her, it grows louder, and my soul—whatever shards are left of it—melts.
I’m not totally sure I should do this, but I’m in no shape to deny her anything. If she asked me to drop to my knees and crawl to her, in this very second, I would.
“M’eudail.” Alistair’s term of endearment for her is soft as it comes through the line, his British accent smooth as butter. “You’re yelling.”
I won’t stay away from Violet Artinos. In fact, I won’t even wait for her to come to me. I’ll go to her and drag her to Duris if I have to. Drugged or kicking and screaming—I don’t fucking care what I have to do. Her refusal is no longer an option.
My stomach flips in protest. “What do you want from me?”
“The better question is,” he says darkly, circling me like I’m prey he’s laid an inescapable trap for, “what don’t I want?”
The logical part of me is screaming not to negotiate with a terrorist. It’s clear Grayson James is off his rocker, that he’s got family issues deeper than anyone knows.
But I am suspicious. “I still don’t understand. What exactly do you want, Grayson? What do you get out of this?”
“You.”
Instead, I pull out my checkbook again, maintaining eye contact as I fill out yet another blank sheet. I throw in an extra zero for good measure, watching her flinch as I slam it on the door beside her head.
“What do I get for fifty grand?”
She shakes her head, trying to slip out from where my arm is ...

My hand slides over, catching her chin before she can escape. “This isn’t a fucking game to me, Violet. I’m happy to pay whatever you’d like for your services, but don’t test me. You say I can watch you for five gs? I’m gonna sit my ass by the bathr...

“You tell me what I can do for fifty, and I’m gonna fucking do it, because I’m not a good guy. I’m not helping you out of the kindness of my heart, and I don’t care that you’re holding a torch for my brother. I’ll blow the ...

“Let me guess. Your family is the bee’s knees, and you can’t bear the thought of being without them for even one second.”
“The bee’s knees?” A laugh catches in my throat. “How old are you?”

He scoffs. “You don’t know what you want.” A pause, then, “I’m younger than Nathaniel, though. What were you doing with him anyway?...

With one hand, I reach out and run my fingertip up the curve of her side, from hip to outer breast. Moisture collects on my print, and I keep my eyes on hers as I bring it to my mouth, licking her essence off.
“You are…” I trail off, searching for words as music crescendos in my bloodstream, excited by her proximity. “Exquisite. They write songs about women like you.”
Maybe, if a person is capable of kindness, it doesn’t matter what color their soul is. Or if they have one at all.
“You can unclench, you know. I don’t bite.”
“And I don’t believe you.” I remember the teeth-shaped marks on my breasts the day after the fundraiser. It certainly wasn’t me who put those there.
That smirk again. “Smart girl. I’d bite i...

“Do you ever think about that night?” I blurt the first thought that comes to mind and immediately wish I could die.
His eyes are still closed and he doesn’t move, but his answer is instantaneous. “Every second of every day.”

“Watch me,” I tell her in a dark voice, one I hardly recognize. “If you make yourself come in front of me, I want those eyes on mine. Don’t you dare look anywhere else.”
“Or what?”
My brows arch. I release her chin and reach between us, strumming a ripened nipple with the side of my thumb. “Or I’ll be forced...

“Because it’s easier when you can’t see, right?” My voice is low, harsh, and I lean in closer so she doesn’t miss a word. “Easier to be anyone or do anything. With a mask, you can enjoy things that don’t look as pretty without it. You can pretend. It’s just like dancing in the dark; nothing ever feels the same in the light.”
“You can pretend you don’t want me,” I growl, so close that I can see the sweat dotting her skin.
I could run, I suppose. There’s a fifty-fifty chance I’d make it—his legs are long, but so are mine, and it’s clear from his posture that he isn’t expecting a struggle.
“Don’t,” he says, and I frown, my brows knitting together at how easily he seems to read me.
“Don’t disrobe? Okay,...

“And if I catch you,” he says, stepping closer, gaze burning hot, “I keep you. Forever. Think very carefully about what you want your future to look like, Little Echo, because I’m the one with the power to make it so. Either take off your clothes and earn your next paycheck, ...

I didn’t know so many hues could blossom on a single person, and I constantly find myself unable to remember colors when they aren’t in relation to her. Everything is gray, or it’s Violet—there is no other option.
