Mauro’s concerns with new premillennialism were many. Scofield’s distinctions between the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, and the church appeared to Mauro to diminish the universality of key ethical teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, to apply to just a portion of humanity. Moreover, the new premillennial teaching that the kingdom of heaven of the Gospels was in fact the “earthly” kingdom of Israel—a realization that Mauro apparently did not make until his thorough study of Scofield’s notes in 1918—weakened the power of Jesus.
