“Hello, my love,” he says in a voice that’s deep and dark and melded into the shadows. It’s the same sonorous sound I heard earlier when I thought the wind had spoken. “Who the hell are you?” I ask, my voice a dry rasp. “Your soulmate.” “What?” “Your soul called to mine from across the dimensions.”
“Mmmmm,” the monster hums. “What is that?” I slip my fingers beneath the appendage to dislodge its grip, but it tightens. It looks like he wants an answer to his question. “What’s what?” I turn to the figure in my bed. “This weapon of yours is coated in something delicious.”
“That thing you just licked clean…” I gulp. “Yes?” “I use it for sex,” I whisper. The monster makes a disgruntled rumble and tosses the toy to the other end of the room. “You will cease the use of these items.”
“That was delicious, but you’ve only just whetted my appetite. I need much, much more.”
“My kind is naturally hostile to others who are not our kin,” he rumbles. “My darker side recognizes you as his mate, but doesn’t care that the things he does would make you cry. He is a selfish, domineering creature who would only use you for his own pleasure.”
The silence between us continues for a few more heartbeats until he finally asks, “Am I so monstrous?”
“Why does it bother you so much?” “Our kind are shaped as we are for survival,” he says in a voice that fills the room. “It pains me to think that you might find any part of me revolting.”
