“You are the most exquisite treasure I’ve ever laid eyes on,” he whispered against my mouth. He bit my lip—hard enough that I flinched. I gasped when he sucked it clean of blood and dragged his mouth over my cheek to vow to my ear, “And I’m going to do such filthy, dishonorable things to you.”
“Sweetest creature...” His lips curved, and he closed the space between us to whisper against my mouth. “No one’s intentions for you are more wicked than my own.”
“I dreamed of you,” he murmured as if unwillingly. “It has been a long time since I’ve dreamed of anything.”
“When I break you, it will be with my cock, and certainly not in a rotting pleasure house.”
“I will give you everything,” he said, low and coarse directly above me. “And I will take everything in return. That includes every drop of pleasure I draw from your body.”
“You will wish for nothing, butterfly. You will have every comfort you need, including the protection of my court in your precious search for this home you desire. Just be mindful that should you find whatever that might be...” Flurries emerged, his words a cold and overt warning. “You will belong only to me.”
“It is a test.” He leaped out of the carriage with distracting grace. “To trust in what you cannot see.”
I was accustomed to being disliked, to being loathed, even, and I hadn’t expected to be treated as though I was a much-needed addition to this royal house. That wasn’t what unsettled me. It was the tension that stalked the halls. A reek of secrets and ghosts. It was the inescapable feeling that no matter who I was—a soon-to-be queen or a changeling—I would not be welcome here.
“Do you think enraging me will benefit you?” “Yes,” I said, my heart beating hard. “For it makes me feel...” I turned my head slightly, the words light and breathless at his bristled jaw. “So much better.”
“If I find you’ve made yourself come without my assistance, I’ll remove them all from the manor.” Surely, he couldn’t be serious. He pressed hard upon my clit, and I both flinched and moaned. Breathing heavier than I’d have liked, I asked, incredulous, “You’re jealous of a book?”
“Will I ever be free, Florian?” His thick brows lowered. As the riders and wagons began to fill the drive, I stepped closer and laid my hand over the black leather covering his chest. “Will you ever let me go?” The wind whistled and threw my hair around my cheeks, Florian’s expression and jaw granite and his touch falling away. “Never, butterfly.”
“If I am to be queen, then shouldn’t I have my own throne?” “Then how would I touch you?”
“They touched you,” he said, and so simply, as he stared at the male who’d lost consciousness while he stood before the next one. “Groped you.” He turned to me with eyes so dark and wild, I ceased breathing. He jabbed his finger at his chest. “My treasure. My creature.” He turned and kicked the leg of the male behind him, roaring, “Fucking mine.”
I was falling, and it was time to find a way out before his refusal to catch me killed me.
There wasn’t just one. I was trapped between two evils.
