It was as if his darkness had called to hers, and she hadn’t been able to resist responding. And for that, she hated him.
“You like it, don’t you? The self-importance of it all. The fact that people tremble in your presence. The fact that you can feel the fear you cause.”
There was something unsettling about Will, some secret he kept hidden behind the seductive smiles and flirtations.
Clothes were weapons, he supposed.
“I see you,” he said roughly, giving her shoulders a light squeeze. “I have always seen you. And nothing I see in you is dark, Aya.”
“I’m here. To pull you back from whatever edge you’re so afraid of falling over.” “You can’t promise me that,” Aya breathed. “We don’t even know where the edge is.” There was nothing but uncompromising will in his face. “Then I’ll go over it with you. To the seven hells themselves, if we must. No matter how far the fall.”
“And you’re jealous.”
“And so what if I am?”
“I do not belong to you,” she whispered, but there was no cockiness to her words.
“You don’t belong to anyone but yourself,” he breathed against her ear, grinning as he felt her fingers dig into his biceps. Her eyes were bright as he pulled back and leaned his forehead against hers, his lips a breath from her own. “Don’t you forget it.”
“I preferred you from behind,” Ryker wheezed. “And I prefer men on their backs,” she snarled, her boot digging into his windpipe. Will sighed. “I need him alive, love.”
“Everything I’ve done has been to protect you. To keep you from this. And I’ve failed. Every time I’ve failed. I couldn’t keep you away from Gianna. I couldn’t keep you from those masochists in the desert. And I can’t—I can’t breathe when I think of how many times I’ve almost lost you. Of how many times I’ve utterly failed you.”
It wasn’t gentle or tentative. It was an unleashing. A claiming.
He was not safe. He was as good as dead. They both were.
“I’m sorry, that was—” “Tactless,” she finished with a small smirk. “Good to know you’re your usual self. If you weren’t, I’d truly know these were our last moments.”
“By my blood and before the gods, I pledge my life to protect you. To fight beside you.” The corner of his lips tipped into a soft smile as he added, “No matter how far the fall.”
