She only wanted to water her plants every day in their apartment above the diner, to live quietly and softly.
What are memories if not stories told repeatedly to oneself? Her whole body is the very narrative of her existence.
“You have sent me on many strange tasks, but none as insane as killing your half sister who has been in a coma for seven years.”
I hate you, she thinks without hesitation. Seconds later, her mind catches up, stutters, provides: Wait, I don’t mean it, and then the hatred only grows.
“Love isn’t deserved. It is given freely.”
So I want to begin by thanking the passage of time, which I am aware is an incredibly weird way to open my acknowledgments, but as much as I always bemoan being an adult because being an adult is hard, I needed this new life stage to write this book in particular.
