Yes, the voice, the story, was critical, but perhaps even more so was knowing which editor was secretly pregnant and would be susceptible to a memoir about a mother’s hunt for her missing child, or which one had recently divorced and might relish a snarky female serial killer. Books spoke to specific people for specific reasons, and it had everything to do with where they were in their lives.
