“I hear you, Mon Trésor,”
“Fuck off, mutt, she’s mine for the rest of the night.” Beau continues to prance next to me, ignoring my order. It took over a month to ship him here and another six weeks in quarantine to get him to the house. Now it seems he’s already staked his claim as the head of it. “Go. Now. Or I’ll never cook you another steak.”
“I was never really insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched.” —Edgar Allan Poe
“Plus rien ne nous séparera. Jamais.” Nothing will ever come between us. Never.
“Ce rêve dans lequel nous sommes tous les deux. Emmène-moi avec toi.” This dream we go into together. Take me with you.
“Je n’aime pas me réveiller sans toi. Je préférerais de loin me réveiller en toi.” I don’t like waking up without you. I would much rather wake up inside you.
“Tu m’as manqué, Mon Trésor.” I’ve missed you, my treasure.
“I remember everything, Cecelia. Every word you said, every look you gave me. Your three kinds of laughs, the details of your dreams, the way your nostrils flare when you’re starting to get pissed. The sting of your slaps, the salt in your tears, the fit of your breasts in my hand. The feel of your mouth, the taste of your pussy, so which part do you need me to remind you of?”
“You want another confession?” I nod, captive in his hands. “I never had a real girlfriend until you. You were my first and only.” His eyes are earnest, his words ripping at my heart when he speaks.
“You want to do normal with me?” I ask as tears I can’t help spring and spill. “I do,” he murmurs, wiping them away. “Why are you crying again, Trésor?” “Because I’m okay with being a mouse . . . sometimes.” His brows pull into a deep V. “What?” “You don’t have to understand it.” “Okay, well, I love you, too, mouse.” He dips and kisses me again, and I feel the strength of it down to my toes as he pulls back, and uncertainty crosses his beautiful features. “I don’t know if I’ll be a good boyfriend.”
“Trésor, I want to Halloweenie with you and Thanksgiving with you, and Christmas with you, but—” I can’t help my giggle. “Halloweenie?” “Yes, with you.” “Hallow-weenie. That’s what you’re saying, right?” “Yes.” The line creases in his forehead. “That’s what I said.” “Tobias, there is no Halloweenie.” “Yes, there is,” he insists. “My mother said it all the time.” I snort. “Tobias, it’s just Halloween.”
“Halloweenie by Halloweenie?” he growls, and I laugh. “Sorry, but it’s hilarious.”
“Keep it up. I may strangle you tonight.” “Ooooo, a Halloweenie reenactment.” I waggle my brows. “Are we going to play dress-up?”
“Ma chatte. Mon corps. Ma femme. Mon cœur. Ma vie.” My pussy. My body. My woman. My heart. My life.
“Oui,” I reply as Tobias reaches over a dancing Beau to grip me in his hold and kiss me breathless. “Salut, Maman.” Hello, Mama. “Bonjour, Frenchman.” Hello, Frenchman. “What are you two up to?” Tobias’s gaze glitters over me, his smile reaching his eyes. “I have a surprise.” He gives Beau a stern look before he barks out his first order. “Assis.” Sit. Beau immediately sits on his haunches. “You can’t take credit. I taught him that,” I taunt. “Roule.” Roll. Beau immediately rolls over, and I clap with glee as Tobias rewards him with a treat. Beau pants, waiting for his next order as Tobias

“You’re a protector, my King. It’s who you are, who you were born to be, and I can’t
seem to stay mad at you for it. But I am a protector too, my love, and it’s time you see that.”
Sean looks over to me, his eyes shining with pride. “You did good, Pup.”
“But the truth is now . . .” Sean admits hoarsely, his teary eyes lifting to mine, “I just want my fucking brother back.”
“No man on earth has ever loved a woman more than I love you. I’ll prove this every day for the rest of our lives. I love you more than any cause, any ambition. The sight of your face over any other on earth.” I choke on every other word, frustrated by my inability to carry out my plan but too emotional to give a fuck. I’d humiliate myself a million times over because she’s shown me, repeatedly, the beauty in a bare, stripped heart. “You own me. You make me so fucking happy. You are my purpose now, and forever.”
“Puis-je demander une faveur de plus?” Can I ask for one more favor? “What is it you want now, my needy Frenchman?” “Un autre trésor.” Another treasure. Taken completely aback, I burst out an incredulous laugh. “We got married five minutes ago, and you already want a baby? Want to try a little marriage first?” “Non,” he says softly, pinning my wrists and settling between my legs, his eyes dropping down to my breasts and beyond, before bringing them back up to mine.
He gives me the dip of his chin, his eyes filled with hope. “Tu apprendras à notre bébé à aimer comme toi.” You will teach our baby to love like you do.
“You’ll never be alone again. You’ll never be alone. I promise you. It was never my heart, Tobias. It was yours.”
“I don’t want to live in a country with a brittle spirit, I want to live amongst soldiers.” —Dave Chappelle
“Have to say, Pup. Motherhood agrees with you. You’ve never looked so beautiful. Can I hold her?”
“Of course,” I say as he bends close, and I can see the lines around his eyes as he gently, so gently takes my daughter into his palms, dwarfing her even more as he cradles her in his forearm, lifting her close for his perusal. “Her father’s eyes,” he whispers, “everything else is you.” His eyes shine with affection as he stares down at her. “She’s so perfect, Pup. So
perfect,” he murmurs as he slowly glides a hand down one of her legs, over her kne...

“Shit, she’s got me already,” he says, “love at first sight. Just like her mother did so many years ago. Your uncle would’ve been just as screwed,” he tells Celine and chuckles, “as was your father the minute he saw your mother.” “I think the French air has gotten to you,” I jest.
“No, Pup,” he refutes, “I’m not downplaying this. This is a big deal. You’re a mama,” he whispers. “I wanted this for you. For you both.”
“I saw him,” I murmur. “In my dream, I finally saw Dom. I saw him so clearly, Tobias. He was at complete peace.”
