They’d been amicable for the most part, but these roles they’d fallen into…this person she’d become…she hated it. A part of her that her bitterness wouldn’t acknowledge knew he hated it too. She was a coward.
Matehood would be different. If he recognized a mate, they’d be bound together for life. He could be as possessive as he wanted since everyone would chalk it up to his mating instinct.
“Oh, Maxu.” There was far too much joy in Metli’s voice. He darted a look to her and found her giving him a wide grin, hiking a thin glitter-coated brow. “Have you recognized someone? Your eyes say yes.”
She’d been ignored and made to feel less than for so long that the only way she could see herself settling down again would be with a man who treated her like the sun shone out of her ass.
Damn, she was glad she wasn’t “you.” That person was about to have a very unpleasant day if the bulging stiff muscles of this man had anything to say about it.
“You don’t recognize your mate?” he rasped in a harsh whisper.
Maxu’s legs tensed. Run, little mate. Make me chase you.
“Your boy is here, and he cleaned up reeeeaaaal good.”
She aimed a saccharine smile his way and jiggled her glass between her fingers. “Looks like I need a refill. I’m going to go get myself a drink.” A hushed “oooh” that raised in pitch near the end echoed from one of the women behind her as she turned on her heel and power walked to the automated bar. Don’t trip. Don’t trip. Don’t trip.
“Hear me, Meg,” Maxu growled. “You have no husband. You are not married. And unless you want that male found and gutted, you won’t speak another word of it.”
He nodded sharply, as if praising her for answering a rhetorical question. “No. Because you’re mine now. Correct?”
He hummed out a low growl. “On your knees.”
“You have a piece of me I can never get back. You own it. And all I want is to have a piece of you in return.
She stared, liquid arousal painting her thighs, excitement making sparks dance in her veins as his eyes slowly turned black again.
“Are you ready for your mate to fill you, vahpti?”
“What are you doing?” His brows furrowed angrily, but he didn’t try to stop her. “Searing your body into my mind so I can think of you when I fuck myself later tonight.”
Her eyes were squinted shut, her mouth no longer holding the hint of a smile. Skin red and blotchy, she shrieked with all her might, releasing something he couldn’t see.
The world was beautiful now. She was beautiful now. Real and vibrant. It felt as though she was a part of the universe. Functioning in it. Changing it. Having an impact instead of being dragged along as an afterthought.
A devilish grin spreading over his face, he eased her wrist toward him, rotated it upward, and slid the two fingers that had just been inside her over her pulse point. He lifted her newly perfumed wrist to his nose and inhaled a long rumbling breath, lids slipping closed in bliss.
“It’s not religion that’s the problem. Religion is a healing thing, and it’s used by so many people to spread happiness and love. But it’s like anything powerful, I guess. It can be used as a weapon too. My family and many of the people in my small town used it to control others.
