For some inexplicable reason, his shaft stiffened in his trousers. The scent of sun-warmed nectar and sweet spice pulsed through the air now, overwhelming his mind and weakening his knees.
Heleax didn’t turn away with a blush like Gamso. He slid his body on the chair until he was facing her fully. “You should know by now that in our culture, many will follow through when a female flirts.” Lucy straightened a bit. His tone wasn’t playful, but it wasn’t angry either. “Promises, promises,” she muttered into her glass.
“But make no mistake, you are mine.”
“I may be rough, Meg, but I will never strike you.” Her lashes fluttered, her gaze bouncing between his eyes. “Never.”
“You’re an odd duck, aren’t you?”
“I don’t know what a duck is, but if I am, then so are you.” His hot breath brushed over her ear.
“I bet I could fuck your love into reality, little mate.”
“Hear me, Meg,” Maxu growled. “You have no husband. You are not married. And unless you want that male found and gutted, you won’t speak another word of it.”
“You’re dripping for me, sweetness.”
“You have a piece of me I can never get back. You own it. And all I want is to have a piece of you in return. But I can’t decipher you.”
“I think I like you most when you’re being a pain in the ass,” he whispered, brushing a thumb over her bottom lip.
“Good,” she grinned, lifting her face as far as she could with her hands still planted on the ground. “Because I enjoy getting you worked up.”

“You will always be buzzing about my head, vahpti, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Do you know what happens to the animals that have lived with vahpti for years when the insects die?”
“No. What?”
“They go mad.” He flashed his white teeth, eyes softening as they lingered on her mouth. “They grow so used to the sound that when it’s gone, the silence is unbearable. That’s how I would be without you. The world would turn off and I wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
“It’s only fair I make up for all my greediness by devoting my life to you. You don’t just make me happy, Meg, you make me alive.”
