“Next time, just tell me you are overwhelmed. I could’ve stepped in for you if I thought you couldn’t do it on your own.” Relief had her shoulders relaxing on an exhale. “I did tell you! I gave you the look.” Meg activated her room’s lock and shuffled inside. “The look? What look?” “You know. The girl-code look that says, Help. I’m really uncomfortable, and I need you to come rescue me.”
“Oh, Meg. I forgot to tell you—” Meg nearly fell out of her chair in an attempt to stop Daunet from saying what she’d crept up behind her to say. “Damn it! Don’t! I told you I’m sorry.” Daunet had plastered a confused look on her face. “Oh, I was just going to remind you that your mate had called.” Without a care in the world, her guard flounced away.
“Meg is one of the few humans I’ve met that is excited to have been taken from Earth. She knows more about Clecania than any of us. She’s studied all the cities and cultures of this planet. It isn’t fun or romantic. I don’t feel like I’ve met my soulmate. I feel like I just discovered an inoperable tumor.”
