Just because you love something doesn’t mean you need to like it all the time.”
Hank Thayer, I think my new favorite pastime is going to be dedicating myself to making you like me.”
I hate that I want her.
Fuck. My. Life.
“The lady said no.”
A possessive hand lands on my lower back as he steers us around the still fuming man-child.
“You shouldn’t have to. A woman should only have to say no once. Fuck that guy.”
“Thank you.” “For what, City Girl?” I shrug. “For being all hot and growly.” I fan my face dramatically. “It’s such a turn-on seeing you murderous.”
She’s turned on. I’m turned on.
“It’s sexy when a man knows his way around the kitchen.” Isla’s voice is a seductive purr as she places a stack of dishes next to me. Turning my head slightly, I give her a single eyebrow raise in response. “Even sexier when a man isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty”—her gaze flicks to where mine are currently submerged in soapy water—“or a little wet.”
“I’d make sure you can man up for what you want next time you knock on this door.”
I pray for someday, and fall asleep dreaming of the woman with the raven hair who quieted the chaos when I held her in my arms.
Apparently silent and broody is a type.
I thought I stopped needing love a long time ago, but maybe I was just waiting for the right kind to come along.
“It’s going to be a five-alarm fire when y’all finally do it.” I can’t argue because she’s not wrong.
“I want to taste you, City Girl.” I breathe as I suck one nipple through the luxurious fabric of her top. “I want to know if you’re as exquisite as a fine wine I’ll never be able to afford.”
“I can buy my own damn wine, Hank. Show me what I can’t buy.”
“Cock out, Thayer.”
“I. Am. Worth. It. You took the time to get my guard down but never again.”
“You make me feel out of control.”
“Trust me when I say there’s nothing I wanted to do more than bury myself inside you and watch you fall apart in my hands.”
“That man is fine. They don’t make men like that where I’m from.”
“Rugged and muscled and intense.”
“I’m going to fuck up again, no doubt about it, but I’ll claw my way through hell to deserve you.”
“I trust you,”
“Put me inside you, City Girl. Take what you need.”
“I trust you,”
“Open your eyes, City Girl, let me see you.”
“You say the sweetest things, Hank Thayer.”
“I’d like to spread you out on the hood of this truck.”
“Buy more. I’ll rip those too.”
“Yours. Now make me come.”
“You drive me crazy, City Girl.” My words are hoarse as I drag my jaw against hers. “And I like seein’ you marked as mine.”
He’s nothing I thought I’d ever want, but he’s absolutely everything I need.
“There’s no one but you.”
“I want to earn you, Isla. It’s been a long time since I wanted to be better. Let me do that for you.”
“Open your mouth, City Girl.”
“City Girl, I’m covered in you.”
The man is harsh and beautiful, sweet and ravenous, and everything in between, and at least for now, he is mine.
“On your knees, City Girl.”
I vow to protect this man at all costs.
“I want the notes on the snacks in the fridge you left just for me, and I want to watch you make us dinner because you’re sexy as fuck in the kitchen.” His lips twitch so I keep going. “I want to watch you love your family, and I want you to look at me like you wouldn’t mind going back to jail if another guy even thinks about talking to me.”
“I want you, Hank. Taking me to dinner or buying me flowers is fine, but people have tried to buy my affection my entire life. You changed my oil without me asking because you know I hate dealing with it, and now you make me little cheesecakes with the Oreo-cookie crust because I mentioned one time that I preferred it that way.”
“Gals like you and Flora don’t need a man to stand up for you.” He gives me a knowing look. “Doesn’t mean we don’t wanna.”
“You don’t need experience to know what’s in your heart. It’s instinct, like a lion protecting his pride. Pride is a funny thing, wouldn’t you say?” Vincent takes a step toward the doorway and then knocks on the wood twice before turning back to me. “Just remember, a king only bows before his queen.”
She’s fucking mine.
“Because I can’t stay away. Seeing you with anyone else makes me lose my mind, Isla.”
“You have to be mine.”
“You’re fucking mine, City Girl.”
“You are beautiful, Hank Thayer. I’m yours.”
