I had a deep fondness for the late Steve Prefontaine, the long-distance runner who competed in the 1972 Olympics. I had several books about him, and I think some of that might’ve had a bit to do with my mom. She had been a walk-on for the Iowa State gymnastics team, and she was very consistent. She once ran for a thousand days in a row, three miles every day, just because it was what she wanted to do. I think there was a correlation there to Prefontaine when I was young.
