“Jesus,” he muttered, his voice gravelly. “Why the hell is he bleeding?”
“Did you keep all my stuff?” “Most of it. If I recall, you had some condiments in your fridge that we threw out. But other than that, most of it’s here.”
“Thanks. And Gram?” “Yes?” “Thanks for letting me stay.” “Like I said, everyone needs a safe place sometimes. And my cubs can always come home.”
“Dude, it’s fine. You don’t have to be paranoid; we never get caught.” I handed Gavin another sticker. “I just spent seven years in prison. Everything makes me paranoid.”
I let out a breath. “Holy shit.” “I told you we didn’t have to worry,” Logan said. “You’re driving around with a convicted felon, defacing public property,” I said. “Of course I’m fucking worried.”
“Has anyone organized a meal train?” “The man got out of prison, not the hospital,” Violet said. “What does he need a meal train for?”
Cara leaned close and lowered her voice. “By the way, I started the rumor that he escaped. I thought it sounded badass and I wanted to see if I could get anyone to repeat it.”
“You know what the problem is, don’t you? You never should have gotten engaged without my blessing.” “I didn’t know you when I got engaged.” “So? You should have waited.”
Maybe I’d stick with little old ladies for clients. The worst they did was gawk at my tattoos and try to feed me cookies.
“How did you get in?” “Key.” “Who gave you a key?” Logan’s forehead creased, like I’d asked a weird question. “I’ve always had a key. We made copies when you moved in.”
Levi groaned. “I hate all of you.” “He’s grouchy when he doesn’t get his beauty sleep,” Logan said. “Actually, he’s grouchy all the time.” “Fuck off.” “See?”
“You want a rematch? I’ll pin you right now.” “Did you guys wrestle for who got the couch?” I asked. “Yeah, out front. But he cheated,” Logan said.
“Why didn’t anyone call me?” “Why would we call you?” Logan asked. She shifted in her chair to face him. “Because I’m her best friend and if anyone tries to hurt her, I’ll murder them, dump the body, then lead the fucking search party.”
Why do you think I always need to run errands or get groceries when you do? I’ve never run my own errands or shopped for my own groceries in my life. But I know you’re always going to need someone to go with you, so I do. Why else would I set foot in a hardware store? I cannot possibly think of a more boring place to lose an hour of my life.”
But seriously, I’d really like to start shopping for bridesmaid dresses, so if you two could hurry it up, that’d be great.”
“Um, Asher?” “Yeah?” “My mom doesn’t let me have Coke.” The corner of my mouth lifted, and I winked. “Don’t worry, kid. I just spent seven years in prison. I ain’t no snitch.” And for the first time since I’d been back, I saw Elijah smile.
I still don’t understand why you look like you got in a bar fight with a bitch named Bertha, but I’m so glad you’re alive.”
“Then he said I need to face reality. He can’t do this. He can’t be a husband or someone’s father.” “Well, not with that attitude, he can’t.”
“You’re not paying for my therapy.” “Yes I am. It’s at least fifty percent my fault that this went on as long as it did. Maybe sixty.”
