Without saying anything, she leaned her head on my shoulder and grabbed my hand. I rested my head on top of hers. I liked it when she did this. It gave me a funny feeling in my stomach, like when she smiled really big, but it was a good feeling, not a bad one.
Grace didn’t know it yet, but she was mine. Long before the end of summer, she’d know. And she’d know I was hers, too.
Gram stopped rocking and leaned forward. She took a deep breath through her nose. “The winds are changing.” My eyes widened. “What?” “That’s the other thing about life and its seasons.” She sat back and resumed her rocking, gently pushing the chair with her toes. “They don’t always change when we think they should. Just when we’re settling in to enjoy the crispness of autumn after the summer heat, we get an early snow.”
