The promise of the “American dream” was not that anyone can become a millionaire if he tries hard enough. That negative characterization is a widespread lie. The American dream was that each person’s striving can attain him a respectable place among fellow Americans. That is, you will likely not be fabulously wealthy, but you can achieve mastery in something that will earn you recognition as a man among men. And in that recognition, you have a place of your own.
