Consider the strange incongruity at work in the rejection of cultural Christianity. In Moore’s view, the Gospel flourishes when the enemies of God have social power, and it flounders when Christians have this social power. Thus, a God-ordained natural power—a means of ensuring social solidarity—aids the church when this power is hostile to Christ. The God of the Gospel turned something that he ordained, as the God of nature, against the Gospel so that it would advance.
