I was sick of being the failure,
What was I doing? This was Kai, for Christ’s sake. He was one hundred (okay, ninety) percent not my type and two hundred percent off-limits.
“I have many other places to be.” A brief light illuminated the shadows in his eyes. “But I chose to be here.”
“I’m afraid not.” Kai’s voice could’ve melted butter. “I don’t like sharing.”
“Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it can’t be done.”
“Twelve,” she said, her tone sweet enough to induce a cavity. “I’m happy to lend it to you. It might help loosen you up so you don’t die of a stress-induced heart attack before age forty.”
I’d much rather have you loosen me up instead.
I wanted to know everything—every memory, every piece and detail that would help solve the puzzle of my fascination with her.
“I was right,”
“You are stalking me.”
“We happened to exit the restroom at the same time. It could hardly be classified as stalking,”
“Might I remind you I left the table first? If anything, I should ask if you’re stalking me.”
“Fine,” she acceded. “But what about when you followed me to the...

“How many times are you going to bring that up?”
“As many times as it takes for you to give me a straight answer.”
“Kai Young, do you have a cr...

“We’re not in high school,” I said, voice tight. “I don’t get crushes.”
“That’s still not a straight answer.”
The lights had gone out—nothing nefarious, but shocking enough to trigger a flight-or- fight response—and his first instinct had been to shield me.
For all the theoretical danger he posed, I’d never felt safer.
Kai and I weren’t lovers. We weren’t even friends. He had no business invading my thoughts like that.
“Keeping tabs on me again, Isabella?”
“Only so I can avoid you. Anyone who translates classics into Latin for fun terrifies me.”
Kai was only thirty-two.
Maybe it was selfish of me. I wouldn’t have wanted him to suffer, but I also never got to say goodbye…
“You chose well. Of all the genres, erotic thriller suits you best.”
“Was that an insult or a compliment?”
“It’s however you want to...

“You’ll finish it.”
“How do you know?”
“I know,”
“Because you’re too strong not to. You might not think so, but you are. Also…”
“You tell great stories, condom varieties no...

I was seeing a different side of Kai, and I liked it. Too much. More than I should.
“My great-grandfather built this room when Valhalla was founded,”
“He was the most introverted of the founders, and he wanted a place where he could be alone and no one could find him. Only the managing committee knows it exists, and only my family knows how to open it.”
“And...

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell someone?”
“Will you?”
“The room isn’t a treasure trove. There are no priceless artifacts or stores of gold here. But if you wanted a quiet place to write…”
“Do you think I’m boring, Isabella?”
“You said it. Not me.”
“I see,” he murmured. “I don’t suppose I can change your mind.”
I didn’t indulge in profanity often, but the temptation to curse pushed against my lips as the implications sank in.
I wasn’t conscious of stopping. All I knew was, one minute, I was moving; the next, I was frozen, watching as Isabella walked toward me.
she had a way of pulling both the best and worst out of me.
“Oh my God,”
“You’re bored.”
“I am not. This is delightful.”
